There are a number of mulberry trees scattered through our neighborhood. In mid June Matt started collecting berries with the hopes of fermenting them into wine. He (the girls and I tagged along too sometimes) wandered around with a big plastic tarp and a long whacking pole to gather the little mild berries.
Backyards. Side streets. Public parks.
Our freezer filled up with zip-locks full of them. Most of the trees here bear these paler berries. They are a bit less sweet from the deep purple ones.
We didn't get enough berries to ferment this year so we did the next best thing. Made jam!
I made a double batch which gave us ten jars. Pretty good haul if you ask me. I like the flavor. It's very delicate and I imagine will be good with a soft cheese.
